2 Trek Turbines will be installed close to la Cite du Havre
Watch the reportage on Radio-Canada HERE!
Montreal is thirsty for renewable energy sources. With a city in plain expansion and receiving thousands of new immigrants every year, the energy demand increases and ways to keep up with this demand scarce. This is why Hydro Quebec in conjunction with Ottawa are investing 5.8 million dollars (on a 18 million dollars project) in 2 turbines type Trek which will be located close to « la Cité du Havre » and will be able to produce 250Kw of electricity. These turbines will be anchored to the bottom of the river and water will flow longitudinally throug them, so for those concern about this project modifying te water levels significantly enough to modify the wave at H67…well it ain’t happening. If everything goes well, the Canadian Government is planning on exporting energy si9nce, according to studies, the Canadian waterways have the potential of producing more than 200.000 MW
This project is expected to be finished before the end of 2010 and it is to remark that it is a pilot project

Whoa – j’espère que ceci n’aura pas d’impact sur la vague à H67… Merci Igor pour ce post – très intéressant!
any idea how deep they’re going to be?
Hi Colin,
We have no idea of the details for the moment…
We’ll try to get somebody from sdtc to tell us a bit more about the project.
As far as the depth goes I’ll try to get that info but the turbines have to be anchored to the bottom of the river. Considering also the ship traffic on the St Lawrence river, I’ll doubt they will be placed close to surface. As far as the disturbance of the river flow, sonce they are positioned longitudinaly in respect to the flow, they need tp get direct flow, te faster the water goes the more electricity they will produce so I don’t think they are planning on disturbing thw current flow
The 2 turbines were been put in place this afternoon. HUGE barge in the middle of gthe channel, pretty impressive to watch. The turbines will be placed right after the bridge downstream
Thanks Igor for the update
very appreciated
